Ciqikou, Chongqing

Ciqikou is a historic port district along the Jialing River that features architecture from the Ming and Qing periods, arranged along steep hillsides in stone-paved lanes. The buildings follow the natural slopes and take advantage of the close connection between the water and the built environment.

The district was founded in the early Song period and later became the region's major center for porcelain production and trade. Its peak came during the Ming Dynasty, when river commerce flourished and its reputation spread widely.

The Baolun Temple shapes daily life here through its regular ceremonies and the quiet space it offers to visitors. People come to pray and reflect in this place, which has been part of local traditions for centuries.

The area is easily reached by public transportation or taxi and is best visited in spring and autumn when the weather is pleasant. The pathways are steep and stone-paved, so comfortable shoes are recommended.

The Zhong Family House from 1890 preserves original Qing period furnishings and interiors, showing how wealthy families lived there. The layout resembles traditional Beijing residential compounds but includes regional adaptations to the riverside setting.
