Sanqingyuan, Theatre building in Dashilar, Beijing, China.
Sanqingyuan is a theatre in the Dashilar area of Xicheng District, Beijing, used for traditional Chinese opera performances. It has tiered seating and a stage with decorated backdrops designed in the style of Peking opera productions.
The theatre was founded around 1800, during the period when Peking opera was taking shape in late imperial China. It grew as a venue alongside the art form itself through the Qing dynasty.
Sanqingyuan offers Peking opera performances with English subtitles, which makes following the story easier for foreign visitors. Performers wear painted makeup and move in a stylized way that functions as a kind of visual language specific to this art form.
Sanqingyuan is inside the Qianmen Jianguo Hotel on Yong'an Lu, close to the Dashilar neighborhood and easy to reach on foot from the main pedestrian street. Shows generally last about one hour, so it is easy to fit a visit into an afternoon or evening itinerary.
Sanqingyuan is considered one of the oldest continuously operating opera venues in Beijing, having stayed active through major political and social changes. The stage design still follows patterns drawn from Qing-era theatre, which makes the setting itself a kind of historical document.
