Shenzhen Reservoir, body of water
Shenzhen Reservoir is the largest man-made lake in the city and supplies drinking water to residents. It covers about 60 square kilometers and is surrounded by gentle hills, with green mountains reflected in its large blue surface.
The reservoir was built in March 1965 and filled with water that same month. It was created to supply the city with drinking water and support farming as China developed new ways to support its growing cities.
The reservoir sits in an area where traditional Hakka architecture still stands, reflecting the cultural roots of the region. Along the shores, visitors can discover old houses and buildings that show how people have lived by the water for centuries.
The reservoir is open from 6 in the morning until 10 at night daily and can be reached by public transport or car, with parking available nearby and several buses serving the area. A 1.5 kilometer flat trail runs along the edge and is easy to walk, but visitors should bring water and snacks as there are few shops inside the park.
At the reservoir stands a spiral-shaped building that glows beautifully in daylight and lights up with colored lights at night, bringing the whole area to life. Nearby is the Lake Light Tower, a futuristic structure with spiral walkways that resemble DNA strands.
