Oste, River system in Lower Saxony, Germany.
The Oste is a river system in Lower Saxony that flows approximately 156 kilometers from Tostedt through flat countryside. It passes through several towns and eventually meets the Elbe River near Otterndorf.
The river served as an important waterway for trade and transport since medieval times. Its connection to the Elbe made it a key route for reaching broader trade networks.
The river plays a role in the Deutsche Fährstraße route, where traditional ferry crossings and historic transporter bridges show how people once moved goods and passengers. Travelers can observe these crossing methods still in use today.
Several boat harbors are located along the river, including facilities at Neuhaus, Geversdorf, and Hechthausen where visitors can dock their boats. Most of these harbors are easy to access and offer basic facilities for boaters.
At Gräpel and Brobergen, manually operated pram ferries are still in use, with local operators running them as they have for generations. These are among the last surviving examples of their kind in northern Germany.
