Viersen is a district capital in western North Rhine-Westphalia that spreads between the Rhine and Meuse rivers. The town connects several formerly independent settlements into one residential area with neighborhoods, green spaces and local shopping streets.
The present town was formed in 1970 through the merger of Süchteln, Dülken and the original settlement. Boisheim had been incorporated earlier and now forms another district.
The town name comes from the medieval Latin word „Viridis
The railway station offers regular connections to Düsseldorf and Mönchengladbach as well as other destinations in the region. The different districts can be explored on foot or by bicycle, as paths run through parks and green zones.
The elevation differences within the town range from the Süchtelner Höhen with over 90 meters down to the lowland of Pielbruch at just under 29 meters. This topography creates clearly separated landscape zones within the municipal boundaries.
