Westerland, Coastal spa town in Sylt, Germany
Westerland is a spa town on the western coast of Sylt island, with a broad sandy beach and a central promenade that features shops and dining spots. The beach runs for several kilometers and shows the typical dune landscape of the island.
The first bathhouse opened here in 1855 and started the development into a bathing resort. Over the following decades, the town grew through railway connections and demand for North Sea cures.
The name comes from the western position facing the open North Sea and already hints at its coastal character. Visitors stroll along the promenade and use wicker beach chairs as shelter from the wind.
Wellness facilities and lodging options sit close to the beach and can be reached on foot. The town is well connected through a railway line from the mainland.
The marine air here holds very few dust particles and stays especially clean throughout the year. Sea spray forms natural aerosols that can benefit breathing and respiratory comfort.
