Sylt, North Sea island in Nordfriesland district, Germany

Sylt is a North Sea island stretching about 40 kilometers with wide sandy beaches, tall coastal cliffs, and dunes along both its northern and southern shores. The island displays two contrasting landscapes: the rough North Sea coast on one side and the flat tidal mudflat shores on the other.

The Hindenburgdamm railway causeway was completed in 1927, connecting the island permanently to mainland Germany for the first time. This link transformed Sylt into a major holiday destination and reshaped its economic future.

The church in Keitum features medieval wall paintings depicting saint stories and maritime symbols that reflect how islanders connected their faith with their life at sea. Walking through its interior reveals decorations that show the blend of religious devotion and seafaring identity.

The island is reached by train via the Hindenburgdamm causeway, by ferry from Danish ports, or through Westerland Airport with connections to major German cities. Plan your visit ahead since access routes vary in availability depending on the season and weather.

The Morsum Cliff displays rock layers spanning millions of years with distinct red, white, and brown striped sedimentary bands that reveal the geological history of the region. Visitors can walk along these exposed layers and understand the forces that shaped the landscape.
