Sylt Aquarium, Public aquarium in Westerland, Germany.
Sylt Aquarium is a public facility in Westerland housing 25 display tanks with more than 1,000 marine creatures in one million liters of seawater. The collection brings together animals from North Sea waters and tropical regions to show the diversity of ocean life.
Opened in 2004, the facility was created to help people learn about North Sea ecosystems and why they matter. The project grew from a desire to connect visitors with the marine world surrounding Sylt Island.
The facility teaches visitors about the North Sea environment through displays of animals from local waters and distant tropical regions. Seeing these creatures side by side helps people understand how different marine habitats work.
The facility is within walking distance from Westerland hotels and easily accessible to visitors. Expect wet floors near the tanks and allow time to move through each section at a comfortable pace.
A 20-meter glass tunnel lets visitors walk directly beneath sea lions, catsharks, and other species as they swim overhead. This underwater passage creates a close-up view of animals that would normally stay at a distance.
