The Benedictine abbey of Sankt Blasien, first documented in 858, reached its peak under Prince-Abbot Martin Gerbert between 1764 and 1793.
The classical dome church, constructed in 1771 by architects Pierre Michel d'Ixnard and Nicolas de Pigage, represents the religious heritage.
The town maintains specialized medical facilities focusing on respiratory treatments, with thermal baths operating at temperatures between 32 and 37 degrees Celsius.
Johann Georg Bodmer established one of Germany's first engineering works in the former abbey buildings, employing 809 workers by 1816.
