Pyrmont Castle, Medieval castle in Roes, Germany
Pyrmont Castle is a medieval castle in the German village of Roes, set on a slate rock outcrop above the Elzbach River. Its square tower keep is one of the oldest parts of the structure and can be seen from the valley below.
The castle was built at the end of the 12th century as a defensive stronghold. The Waldbott family later took ownership and added large windows, giving parts of the building a less military character.
The castle is used today for private events and celebrations, so its old halls still see regular use. Visitors can observe how a medieval building continues to play a role in local gatherings.
The castle is clearly visible from the valley, and marked footpaths lead up to it, though the climb calls for some effort. Visiting between spring and fall works best, as the paths are drier and easier to walk.
The base of the castle is the starting point of the Pyrmonter Felsensteig, a trail that passes through narrow rock passages and along steep cliff faces next to the river. The path is considered one of the most celebrated rock trails in Germany.
