Hörn Bridge, Steel footbridge in Kiel, Germany.
The Hörn Bridge is a steel footbridge in Kiel spanning the fjord with three movable segments that can be folded upward hydraulically. It measures 256 meters in length and allows vessel traffic to pass underneath when opened.
The bridge was completed in 1997, replacing an earlier crossing over the fjord. Initial technical malfunctions caused concerns about its reliability among the local population.
The bridge takes its name from the harbor area it crosses and has become a meeting point for residents and visitors since opening. It connects the city center directly to the waterfront, making the proximity to the water part of everyday life.
The bridge opens multiple times daily to allow vessel passage, with each opening cycle lasting about two minutes. Plan your crossing accordingly if visiting during periods of regular maritime traffic.
The bridge is supported by thick steel cables running through masts on either side, distributing the load across the structure. This cable-stayed design is an interesting engineering feature visible from different vantage points around the harbor.
