Andechs, municipality in Starnberg district, Germany

Andechs is a village in the Starnberg region that rises on a hill above Lake Ammer. The centerpiece of the place is the pilgrimage church with its onion domes and adjacent monastery buildings that define the village character.

The monastery dates back to the 10th century and was rebuilt and expanded several times over the centuries. The current Baroque church was built in the 18th century and made the place an important pilgrimage destination in the region.

The village is primarily known for its Benedictine monastery, which has shaped the religious and social center of the region for centuries. The monastery complex with its church dominates the village landscape and draws visitors interested in the spiritual significance of the place.

The village sits on a hill and can be reached by hiking trails or by car through narrow roads. In the monastery there is an inn where visitors can try local food and house-brewed beer.

The monastery has brewed its own beer for centuries, still made today using traditional recipes. This monastery beer is known far beyond the region and reflects the long craft tradition of the place.
