Szczecin Lagoon, Estuarine lagoon in Vorpommern-Greifswald, Poland.
Szczecin Lagoon is an estuarine body of water between Poland and Germany covering about 900 square kilometers. The water connects to the Baltic Sea through three straits and receives flow from several Oder River branches.
The lagoon shifted between Polish, Swedish, and Prussian control across centuries as power changed in the region. After 1945, the border was set with the eastern portion belonging to Poland and the western section to Germany.
Fishing villages along the shores maintain centuries-old maritime ways of living passed down through families. Walking through these communities, you can see how water-based traditions remain woven into daily life today.
The lagoon has many harbors and places to explore by boat along its shores. Water conditions and weather can change, so it helps to plan ahead and check local conditions before heading out.
Freshwater from the Oder mixes with salty water from the Baltic Sea creating a special environment. This blend supports living creatures from both freshwater and ocean habitats in the same place.
