Holnis, Peninsula in Glücksburg, Germany
Holnis is a peninsula at Glücksburg on the Baltic Sea with a 2-kilometer sandy beach that has designated areas for surfing and dogs. An 8-kilometer circular path leads visitors along the harbor and provides many spots for watching birds and nature.
About 300 years ago, Holnis was connected to the mainland through a narrow strip of sand, and old water surfaces remain visible at Altpugum and Neupugum today. These changes show how water and tides have shaped this landscape over generations.
The harbor at Schausende shapes daily life on the peninsula, where fishermen continue their work and keep maritime traditions of the Baltic region alive. Visitors can observe these practices directly while walking along the waterfront.
The peninsula is best explored on foot or by bike using the well-built paths that are safe and easy to walk. Visitors should allow time to stop at different observation points and dress appropriately for the season.
The Holnis-Noor wetland was rewetted in 2002 and is now a salt meadow habitat where many coastal birds nest and feed. This restoration has brought new life to much of the area and makes it today an important refuge for uncommon bird species.
