Duisburg Zoo, Animal park in Duisburg, Germany
Duisburg Zoo is an animal facility on Kaiserberg hill in the northern part of the city, occupying land on both sides of the A3 motorway. A vegetated bridge links the two sections, allowing visitors and animals to move between them without encountering traffic.
The facility opened in 1934 under the name Duisburg-Hamborner Tierpark am Kaiserberg and closed during the Second World War. It reopened in 1946 with animals transferred from Munich and gradually developed its focus on marine mammals.
Local families treat the facility as a regular weekend destination where children learn about wildlife through hands-on demonstrations and feeding sessions. Keepers often interact with visitors during daily routines, creating moments of direct contact with conservation work.
Doors open each day at 9 in the morning and close at sunset, with exact times shifting through the seasons. Visitors find several refreshment areas spread across the grounds and restrooms with changing facilities in all main sections.
The dolphinarium holds 3 million liters of seawater and houses seven bottlenose dolphins in a specially designed pool with underwater viewing windows. The setup allows observation from different angles and shows the animals moving both above and below the surface.
