Nürburg Castle, Medieval castle ruin in Nürburg, Germany.

Nürburg Castle is a medieval fortification on a volcanic cone in the Eifel region. The structure consists of stone walls, towers, and ramparts spread across the hillside, displaying different building periods.

The fortress was founded in 1166 to protect trade routes in the region. It evolved over several centuries through expansions and reinforcements, though it was later partially destroyed and subsequently rebuilt.

The castle takes its name from the family that originally built and shaped it. Today, visitors can walk through the spaces and imagine the different phases of its expansion.

The site sits atop a hill and is best explored from the top, as this gives you an overview of the entire structure. The paths are uneven in places and include stairs, so sturdy footwear is advisable.

The volcanic cone beneath the castle shaped the entire landscape around the site. This geological feature once made the location ideal for a fortress.
