Schloss Belvedere, Baroque palace in Weimar, Germany.
Schloss Belvedere is a Baroque palace in Weimar with a central building flanked by symmetrical pavilions and surrounded by extensive gardens. The grounds feature both formal French-style layouts and more naturalistic English garden sections, with an Orangery and additional service buildings completing the complex.
Construction took place between 1724 and 1732 under Duke Ernst August of Saxe-Weimar, designed by Johann August Richter and Gottfried Krohne. The completed building became a testament to Baroque architecture and later served as a repository for art collections accumulated over generations.
The name comes from the Italian words for beautiful view, reflecting 18th-century tastes for pleasure palaces away from court life. Visitors can still see how the formal French garden sections contrast with the more natural English-style areas today.
The palace sits at the edge of town and is accessible by public transport or a short walk from the city center. The gardens are extensive, so wear comfortable shoes and allow plenty of time to explore both the buildings and grounds.
The Orangery holds a notable collection of historic carriages that reveal how transportation looked in earlier times. A horticultural catalog from 1820 documents exotic plants that once grew on the grounds.
