Pfahlbaumuseum Unteruhldingen, Open-air museum in Uhldingen-Mühlhofen, Germany.
Pfahlbaumuseum Unteruhldingen is an open-air museum on Lake Constance in Uhldingen-Mühlhofen, Germany, with twenty reconstructed stilt houses standing on wooden poles above the water. The structures sit close together and are linked by wooden walkways, allowing visitors to move from house to house.
The first stilt houses were reconstructed in the 1920s following underwater excavations in Lake Constance and opened in 1922. Since then additional houses have been added and existing structures revised multiple times as new archaeological findings emerged.
Stone and bone tools sit beside reconstructed looms and hearths from the Stone and Bronze Age periods. Visitors see how clay storage vessels were arranged and how fishing nets hung from the rafters of these waterside homes.
The wooden walkways between houses can become slippery when wet, so sturdy footwear is advisable. Wheelchair users should inquire in advance as not all areas are accessible without steps.
Some houses show special construction techniques with interlocking beams held together without nails or metal parts, using only wooden joints. In one building dried herbs and fish nets hang from the ceiling exactly as they were stored thousands of years ago.
