Arboretum of Mainau, Botanical garden collection on Mainau Island, Germany.
The Arboretum of Mainau is a botanical collection on an island in Lake Constance with about 45 hectares of land, where around 500 species of deciduous and coniferous trees grow. The subtropical climate of the surroundings allows rare tree species to thrive that would otherwise not be native to this region.
Grand Duke Frederick I of Baden purchased Mainau Island in 1853 and began planting exotic trees, including giant sequoias from California. This early phase shaped the character of the place and laid the foundation for its present appearance.
The Italian rose garden displays many rose varieties arranged in geometric patterns, surrounded by classical pergolas, fountains, and stone sculptures that shape the garden like a living artwork.
The site is accessible daily and can be conveniently reached by bus connections or ferries from various points around Lake Constance. The paths are well developed and allow visitors to explore the entire grounds.
Some of the sequoias and metasequoias date from the middle of the 19th century and are over 150 years old. These older trees show how successful the original planting was and are living witnesses to the early garden history.
