Küsten Canal, Summit level canal through Oldenburg and Cloppenburg, Germany.
Küsten Canal is a shipping waterway in northwestern Germany that connects the Dortmund-Ems Canal with the Hunte and Weser rivers. The waterway runs through flat countryside and allows cargo vessels to pass between these major water routes.
The canal was built between 1922 and 1935, developed from the expansion of an existing drainage channel. Its completion created an important link for regional cargo transport by water.
The waterway earned military recognition when Canadian and Polish forces conducted strategic operations across its waters during April 1945.
The canal accommodates larger cargo vessels with adequate depth and features locks to manage elevation changes. Traveling through requires basic familiarity with lock operations and offers good visibility across the landscape.
The canal uses a summit pound design that allows vessels to navigate elevated sections through specialized locks. This engineering solution was innovative for its time and enabled ships to be carried across different height levels.
