Cloppenburg is an administrative district in Lower Saxony situated between Bremen and the Dutch border. The area comprises several municipalities and features a rural character defined by extensive agricultural lands and open countryside.
The territory was part of the County of Tecklenburg during medieval times and later came under the rule of the Prince-Bishopric of Münster. This ecclesiastical administration shaped the region until the early 1800s.
