Altes Rathaus, Art gallery and museum in Wittlich, Germany
The Altes Rathaus is a museum housed in a Renaissance building constructed from 1650 onward that displays modern artworks across roughly 200 square meters of exhibition space. It presents paintings, glass art, and notable window cycles within its historic rooms.
The building was reconstructed on medieval foundations between 1650 and 1652 under the direction of Carl Caspar von der Leyen following a major fire in 1647. Additional fires in 1689 and 1707 damaged the facade and prompted external alterations.
The building's name reflects its former role as the seat of city administration and now displays works by local and modern artists that mirror the region's contemporary artistic vision. Visitors encounter a collection that bridges different artistic periods and expressions.
The museum is located in the town center and is easily accessible on foot with clear signage directing visitors to the main entrance. Visitors should note that the exhibition spaces are spread across multiple floors and stairs are necessary for exploring.
A statue of Saint Rochus sits on the curved gable side of the building, added after the fire disasters of the 17th century and remains a distinctive feature of its silhouette today. The figure was once an invocation of the patron saint against fire and plague.
