Alte Burg

Alte Burg is a castle situated on a hilltop overlooking the Neckar River, built with solid stone walls and a residential tower. The structure displays the typical defensive features of early medieval fortifications, including thick masonry and narrow window openings.

The castle was founded in the 11th century during the Salian period and served as the residence of the Counts of Lauffen. The site lost its prominence when the noble family relocated their seat to the opposite bank of the river.

The structure represents the transition from wooden fortifications to stone castles in medieval Germany, marking a significant shift in noble residences.

The castle is visible from outside and commands a good view over the river valley from its elevated position. Visitors should note that it is a preserved historical site best observed from the exterior.

The northern wall of the castle extension includes a shaft whose function changed after the construction of the main tower.
