Altenburg, Medieval castle ruins in Main-Kinzig-Kreis, Germany.
Altenburg is a medieval castle site in the Main-Kinzig-Kreis region, with remains still visible in the landscape today. The trapezoidal fortification contains wall sections and stone foundations that outline its former boundaries and internal divisions.
The castle site originated in the early medieval period and is connected to the lords of Kensheim, a regional noble family. Archaeological excavations since the 1800s by the Hanau Historical Society have uncovered these historical connections and revealed multiple phases of settlement.
The site displays features typical of early noble residences, with stone foundations visible in the northwest corner. Visitors can observe the layout and wall remnants that reflect the daily lives of wealthy families.
The site is easily accessible and offers clear views of the former walls and structures from the surrounding area. The broad moat that once protected the fortification remains visible in many sections and helps visitors understand the original layout.
Five circular mounds located about 400 meters west of the main site suggest older residential buildings from different time periods. These scattered settlement traces indicate the region was inhabited over centuries before settlement eventually concentrated here.
