Alter Botanischer Garten Marburg

The Old Botanical Garden Marburg is a 3.6-hectare garden near Elisabeth Church that contains plant collections from different climate regions and environments. The University of Marburg maintains it for research and teaching purposes.

Professor Conrad Moench founded an early botanical garden near Elisabeth Church in 1786, and Georg Wilhelm Franz Wenderoth moved the collection to its current location in 1810. This shift reflects how universities grew their scientific collections during the 1800s.

The garden displays English landscape design in its curved pathways and plant groupings that visitors can walk through. This approach shows how science and gardening became interconnected in university life.

The garden is located at Pilgrimstein 3 and welcomes visitors daily without requiring any entrance fee. Signage throughout the grounds helps identify plants and explains the layout of different sections.

The tree collection includes specimens over 200 years old, such as a 38-meter tall tulip tree. These ancient trees demonstrate the long history of botanical study at this location.
