Alter Friedhof der Zwölf-Apostel-Gemeinde, Cultural heritage cemetery in Schöneberg, Germany
The Old Twelve Apostles Cemetery is a burial ground in Schöneberg with tree-lined avenues of lindens and graves arranged along its surrounding walls. The layout follows the style of an Italian Campo Santo with monuments spanning different periods.
The cemetery was established in 1864 on military property outside the city when that area remained largely undeveloped. A new burial ground was created later after this location reached full capacity around 1882.
The cemetery takes its name from the Twelve Apostles congregation whose church conducted burials here. Visitors can still see graves of artists, scientists, and public figures who shaped Berlin's history.
The site is an open grounds offering visitors space to walk and observe graves in a calm setting without special facilities. Keep in mind that this remains an active cemetery, so respectful conduct is expected from all visitors.
The 1957 chapel features colored mosaic windows designed by glass artist Alfred Kothe that give the structure a distinctive appearance. These artistic details are often overlooked by visitors but become immediately noticeable upon entering the building.
