Altes Boyneburger Schloss, Medieval château in Wichmannshausen district, Sontra, Germany.
The Altes Boyneburger Schloss is a three-story sandstone building standing at the northeastern edge of the historic village center in Sontra, next to the village church of Wichmannshausen. The interior spaces spread across three floors and now house a museum with exhibition areas.
The Boyneburg family moved their seat from a hilltop castle ruin to this valley location during the 1400s and established their new residence here. The building later became a museum and now preserves memories of this noble family and its era.
The museum displays objects from daily life in the region and tells stories of crafts, celebrations, and traditions that shaped life here. Visitors get a sense of how people in this area once worked and lived together.
The building is open to visitors from May to September and allows access to exhibition rooms on all three floors. Entry is straightforward and the rooms are easy to walk through, as the old house is a manageable size.
Directly across from the castle courtyard entrance stands a former watchman's house built on a large foundation, which was restored in 2017. This outbuilding shows how security and management functioned on a noble estate.
