Boyneburg, Medieval castle ruin in Sontra, Germany
The castle ruins stand on a 513-meter mountain, covering 4.5 hectares with remaining structures including the central tower and chapel built of rubble stone.
First documented in 1107 as Bemelburch, King Heinrich V ordered the castle's destruction due to raids, after which Count Siegfried III of Northeim began reconstruction.
The annual Bread Donation Festival takes place at the castle ruins during Ascension Day, where local residents gather to share bread following tradition.
Visitors can explore the preserved sections of the castle, including the gatehouse restored in 1987 and parts of the original five-sided defensive keep.
Emperor Friedrich I Barbarossa held multiple court assemblies at the castle, establishing it as a central point between important imperial properties in the 12th century.
