Rendsburg, Port town in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.
Rendsburg is a district capital in Rendsburg-Eckernförde, northern Schleswig-Holstein, about 22 miles (35 km) southwest of Kiel. It sits where the Eider meets the Kiel Canal, surrounded by flat meadows and cropland cut by wide waterways.
The settlement began around 1199 as a Danish border stronghold and passed to Prussia following the war of 1864. Construction of the Kiel Canal started in 1887, drawing industry and commerce to the waterfront.
Locals walk along narrow lanes that follow the same layout as when merchants and craftsmen first settled here, trading grain and fish. Many street names recall old professions such as bakers, tanners, and rope makers who once worked beside the water.
The railway station sits south of the canal and links Hamburg with Flensburg, giving travelers regular trains in both directions. Walking along the waterfront takes you to most sights in the center within half an hour.
A tall railway bridge crosses the canal and carries beneath it a suspended ferry that moves vehicles and pedestrians over the water without any central support. This structure dates to 1913 and still operates daily.
