The Lübeck Museum of Theatre Puppets occupies five medieval brick buildings near St. Peter's Church and displays over 1000 puppets from three continents. The collection spans different types ranging from hand puppets to mechanical figures from various traditions.
Fritz Fey Jr. established this collection through decades of gathering puppetry items from Germany and international sources. His work created a significant archive documenting the history of puppetry practices.
The collection showcases hand puppets, marionettes, rod puppets, and shadow figures from Indonesia representing different performance traditions. This range allows visitors to see how puppetry works across various cultures and techniques.
The museum is currently undergoing renovations until March 2025, with temporary exhibitions and information available at the TheaterFigurenMobil in St. Petri churchyard. Check ahead to see which parts of the collection are on display during your visit.
