Alte Synagoge, Historical synagogue in Cottbus, Germany.
The Alte Synagoge in Cottbus was a religious building that once stood at Karl-Liebknecht-Straße 132 and accommodated around 300 worshippers. The original structure no longer exists, but its former location is now marked by a department store with a commemorative plaque.
The building was constructed in 1902 and served as a religious center for the Jewish community until its destruction during the November pogroms of 1938. With the attack on this synagogue, the centuries-long Jewish presence in Cottbus came to an end.
The synagogue served as a gathering place for the Jewish community in Cottbus and shaped religious life in the city for many decades. Today, a memorial at the site honors this lost community and its importance to local society.
The memorial site is located at Karl-Liebknecht-Straße 132, where a department store now stands and is easy to find. The plaque on the west side of the building is visible from the street and can be visited at any time of day.
An inscription from Rabbi Martin Riesenburger about peace is engraved on the memorial plaque installed in 1999. These words preserve the message of a man who led the community and honor its legacy after destruction.
