Paul-Werner-Oberschule, Bahnhofstraße 11
Paul-Werner-Oberschule, Bahnhofstraße 11, Secondary school in Cottbus, Germany
The Paul-Werner-Oberschule is a three-story brick school building with a mansard roof and distinctive octagonal entrance hall topped by a cross-ribbed vault. The structure contains roughly 18 general classrooms alongside specialized rooms dedicated to language study, science, and computer instruction.
Built in 1889 as Bismarckschule, the structure quickly became one of Prussia's largest educational institutions. Over the 20th century, it underwent name changes and modifications that reflected shifting educational priorities and regional developments.
The Sorbian people, an indigenous ethnic group of this region, speak their own language, and the school keeps this tradition alive through classroom instruction. This cultural thread connects the institution to the local community and its heritage.
Located at Bahnhofstraße 11 near Cottbus railway station, the building is easily accessible by public transport. Keep in mind it remains an active school, so visits should respect regular school hours and schedules.
Extensively renovated in 2006, the building preserved its distinctive Berlin round-arch architectural style from the 1800s. The restoration demonstrates how historic structures can meet contemporary needs while retaining their original character.
