Alte Waage

The Alte Waage is a two-story brick building with a double hipped roof in Dutch Baroque style located at Neue Straße 1. The structure originally served to weigh goods transported through the city and continues to shape the town's appearance today.

The building was constructed in 1714 and replaced an earlier wooden structure that had served as the city's weighing station since 1570. The new construction occurred when Leer was growing as a trade center and solid stone buildings were becoming more important.

The building displays Dutch Baroque style, which remains uncommon in this region and shapes the town's appearance. It recalls an era when Leer was a trading hub and such structures defined commercial life.

The location functions as a restaurant today and is accessible to visitors from the street, with the original appearance well preserved. The interior has adapted to modern use while the exterior maintains its historical form.

A nonprofit society took over the building in 1921 and has preserved it to this day, ensuring its survival. This continuity of care allowed the structure to withstand several historical upheavals unscathed.
