Alte Waldschänke, Historic tavern in Tegel, Germany
Alte Waldschänke is a timber-framed building on the southern Ruppiner Chaussee, marking the boundary between Tegel and Tegeler Forest. It contains multiple dining rooms seating around 75 guests indoors and a beer garden adjacent to the forest with space for around 150 people.
The building was constructed in 1650 as worker housing near Tegel Castle and later converted into a tavern serving traders and craftsmen entering Berlin. After World War II, it underwent changes that transformed it from a simple rest stop into an upscale dining establishment.
The name reflects its location at the forest edge, where guests have long enjoyed meals in a countryside setting. Today, this heritage is visible in the mix of traditional spaces and modern comforts that visitors experience.
The establishment is easy to reach, located on a prominent street at the forest edge with good access from the city. Its two sections, indoor dining rooms and outdoor beer garden, allow visitors to choose between covered and open seating depending on the weather and preference.
After major renovations in 1996, the protected structure was combined with residential apartments, making it the oldest still-operating restaurant in the city. This combination of living and dining under one roof is rarely found in this form today.
