Alte Wache, Neoclassical guardhouse in Sondershausen, Germany
The Alte Wache stands on the market square of Sondershausen, featuring six Doric columns supporting a triangular pediment with a central inscription.
Between 1837 and 1839, architect Carl Scheppig constructed this classical structure as part of the residence palace complex of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen princes.
The building represents a central element of Thuringia's classical architecture, with its facade made entirely of Rottlebener sandstone rising ten meters high.
The former tourist information center has transformed into an ice cream café in 2023, offering visitors a new way to experience this historical structure.
The building incorporates a half-cylinder design with a top balustrade, forming part of a curved terrace ensemble in front of the residence palace.
