Alte Wache

The Alte Wache stands on the market square of Sondershausen and is defined by six Doric columns supporting a triangular pediment with a central inscription. The structure appears compact and stable, with a half-cylindrical form that gently curves around the plaza.

The building was constructed between 1837 and 1839 according to plans by architect Carl Scheppig as part of the princely palace complex. It served as the tourist information center for many years before being converted into an ice cream cafe in 2023.

The building shapes the town center and shows how important classical design was to Sondershausen. Visitors see here an example of the strict, ordered forms that were popular in the 1800s.

The building sits centrally on the market square and is easy to reach on foot, especially when exploring the downtown area. Today it houses an ice cream cafe, making it a pleasant spot to rest and view the classical architecture.

The building was constructed with Rottlebener sandstone, a local material that gives it a warm, light color. This stone was quarried in the region and is typical of many classical structures throughout Thuringia.
