Sondershausen

Sondershausen is a town in Thuringia situated between mountain ranges, with the Wipper River flowing through forested areas. The municipality consists of several districts spread across a sizable landscape.

The town was the capital of a principality from 1599 until 1918 and continues to shape the character of the place today. When the monarchy ended, it became part of the newly formed state of Thuringia.

The palace museum displays regional artwork and tells the story of the princely family that once ruled here. Visitors can see how nobility lived in these rooms during their time of power.

The town is best explored on foot, with its various districts easily accessible from one another. There are good paths between the neighborhoods and through the surrounding countryside.

Deep salt mines lie beneath the town, where concerts take place in underground halls. These performances feature classical music in an extraordinary setting.
