Heiligenhafen, Coastal spa and urban municipality in Ostholstein, Germany
Heiligenhafen is a coastal town on the Baltic Sea shore in Ostholstein, Germany, set between two headlands and a sheltered inlet. The town center sits close to the water, with residential areas spreading into the flat hinterland behind.
The fishing settlement grew gradually into a resort starting in the 18th century. After World War II, infrastructure was rebuilt, and harbor expansion brought the town closer to recreational boating.
The name refers to an earlier church location, though little remains visible of that connection in today's street layout. Along the waterfront, sailors and weekend visitors mingle near snack bars and small shops that cater to summer guests.
The town is best reached by regional roads from nearby Oldenburg in Holstein, where regular bus services connect. The beach and harbor sit within walking distance of each other, allowing most sightseeing on foot.
The Graswarder headland serves as a designated bird reserve and remains largely closed to visitors. On the opposite side sits Steinwarder, a smaller peninsula with open views toward the sea.
