Laboe, Seaside resort in Plön District, Germany
Laboe is a resort town on the Baltic coast in northern Germany, located where the Kiel Fjord meets open water. The town spreads along the shore, with a small historic center, a working harbor lined with fishing boats and yachts, and a long sandy beach backed by dunes and grass areas.
Settlers first arrived in the Middle Ages and made their living from fishing along the fjord. At the end of the 19th century, city dwellers from Kiel discovered the place as a bathing spot and built a promenade and hotels.
Its name comes from a Slavic word for swan, reflecting the old roots of the area near the Baltic coast. Families come to swim and relax, while others stroll along the promenade or visit the working harbor.
Most visitors come during summer for swimming and walking, while autumn and winter offer quieter days for beach strolls and harbor visits. Parking is available near the beach and harbor, but spaces fill quickly on warm weekends.
From the beach promenade, visitors often watch large cargo ships and naval vessels slowly passing in and out of the Kiel Fjord. On windy days, kitesurfers and windsurfers gather to take advantage of the open water conditions.
