Freistrand
Freistrand is a free beach area on the Kiel Fjord in Laboe made of soft sand and shallow water. The beach stretches over a long distance and is easily accessible on foot from the Strandklause restaurant, with the eastern side offering more natural sections with fewer visitors.
Laboe developed from a fishing and sailing place in the 19th century into a popular seaside resort. Freistrand is part of this development and was kept as a free-access area to preserve public access to the coast for all visitors.
The name Freistrand refers to the free and unrestricted access to this beach section without fees or barriers. Visitors use this place as a gathering spot for relaxation, walks, or simply watching the ships passing through the busy Kiel Fjord.
The beach is freely accessible year-round with no entrance fee required. Visitors can find public toilets, changing facilities here, and can rent beach chairs at several spots or start from the nearby Strandklause restaurant.
From Freistrand, visitors can regularly watch large cargo ships and cruise liners passing through the Kiel Fjord, one of the world's busiest shipping routes. Occasionally, submarines can be spotted entering or leaving the bay.
