Freyung, District capital in Freyung-Grafenau, Germany.

Freyung is a district capital in Freyung-Grafenau county, Bavaria, positioned at about 655 meters elevation between the Danube River and the Czech border. The town functions as the administrative hub that connects the surrounding rural settlements through local services.

Freyung emerged as an administrative center following the 1972 merger of the former Grafenau and Wolfstein counties. This reorganization shaped the region's structure for decades to come.

The name derives from medieval freedom rights that once protected residents from outside authority. Today, traditional buildings and local festivals show how the community maintains connections to its past.

The town is easily accessible by regional roads and has good bus connections to nearby communities. Main services are concentrated in the central area around the town hall square.

Wolfstein Castle overlooks the nearby settlement of Ort and recalls the era when the region fell under the rule of the Bishopric of Passau. This ruin tells of the area's feudal origins before it became a modern administrative town.
