Bismarck Monument, Colossal granite monument in Neustadt, Germany.
The Bismarck Monument stands in Elbpark as a towering granite figure reaching more than 34 meters high. The sculpture holds an eight-meter sword and rests on a base decorated with carved eagles.
Johann Emil Schaudt designed the structure and Hugo Lederer created the sculpture, unveiled on June 2, 1906. The project consumed half a million Goldmarks.
The monument represents Otto von Bismarck, the first Chancellor of Germany from 1871 to 1890, who led the unification of German states.
The monument sits in Elbpark near the Landungsbrücken pier with direct views over the harbor. Several transport lines run within a few minutes' walk from here.
A network of catacombs runs beneath the base, used as an air-raid shelter between 1939 and 1940. Up to 650 people took refuge there during attacks.
