The town is structured along the river with various areas to explore and museums, monuments, and parks spread throughout the center. Visitors should allow time for walking and will find different offerings both in the old town and newer quarters.
A potash deposit was discovered here in 1861 and soon led to the world's first large-scale extraction operations for this mineral. This industrial importance attracted workers from different regions and caused the town to grow rapidly.
