Ebrach, market municipality of Germany
Ebrach is a market municipality in the Steigerwald, a forested hill area between Bamberg and Würzburg. It is shaped by a large former monastery complex that includes a Gothic church and several historic outbuildings grouped around a central courtyard.
Cistercian monks founded a monastery in the Ebrachtal valley in 1127, and it grew over the centuries into one of the wealthiest abbeys in Franconia. The monastery was dissolved in 1803, but the church survived and still serves as a parish church today.
The name of the place comes from the Mittlere Ebrach river that runs through the valley. The old monastic buildings still shape the look of the village and are easy to spot on a walk through the center.
The monastery complex is accessible on foot and guided tours are available for those who want more context about the buildings. The surrounding Steigerwald forest has walking routes of different lengths, and there is a natural swimming pond nearby for warmer days.
The church has around 50 windows for a building of its size in a village, a direct result of the Gothic design used when it was built. Inside, an organ with 36 stops is still played today during services and concerts.
