Kellenhusen, municipality of Germany
Kellenhusen is a coastal spa town and municipality on the Baltic Sea in Ostholstein, situated along Luebeck Bay. It has a long sandy beach, a seafront promenade, and a small village center set back from the shore between dunes and residential streets.
The village traces its origins to an early settlement of a family called Kellen, whose name has survived in the place name to this day. When the railway reached the Baltic coast in the 19th century, the area grew into a recognized sea spa destination.
The name Kellenhusen comes from 'Kellens Husen,' meaning the houses of the Kellen family. Many buildings in the village follow the red-brick style common along this stretch of the Baltic coast, giving the streets a recognizable look.
The beach is flat and easy to walk along, with no significant steps or barriers between the promenade and the sand. The main season runs from early summer to early autumn, when most facilities along the seafront are open.
The seabed here drops so gradually that you can walk a long way out before the water reaches waist height, which is rare along this coast. This natural feature has made Kellenhusen a go-to spot for families with very young children for many decades.
