Teufelsberg, Former Cold War listening station in Grunewald, Germany.
Teufelsberg is a 120-meter artificial hill made entirely from World War II debris, densely forested and topped by four large radar domes. The summit offers sweeping views across western Berlin.
After 1945, the hill was built up with rubble and buried the incomplete remains of a Nazi military compound that the Allies could not demolish. During the 1960s, this site became a major Cold War listening station.
The abandoned buildings and radomes have become an open gallery where artists continuously create and display street art and murals on almost every surface.
You can visit daily and reach the top either on foot or by bicycle over a sloped path. Wear sturdy shoes because the terrain can be uneven and the climb gets steeper near the summit.
The largest dome functions like a giant whispering gallery where your voice bounces back in multiple echoes from its curved walls. This acoustic quirk exists because of the dome's circular design and the surviving metal framework inside.
