Märkisches Museum, History museum in Mitte, Germany
The Märkisches Museum is a history museum in central Berlin presenting how the city evolved from the Ice Age through to recent times. The collection spreads across two spacious floors featuring objects from different periods and subjects.
The museum was founded in 1874 from a collection of documents, coins, and artworks from Berlin and Brandenburg. It became the first purpose-built city museum of its kind, opening in 1908 under architect Ludwig Hoffmann.
The building displays architectural elements from northern Germany, including a chapel, guild hall, and armory that together shape how the regional collection is presented.
The building is currently undergoing major renovation and remains closed until 2028. During this period it is being transformed into a cultural and creative complex with new functions.
The building was one of the first museum structures worldwide designed specifically to house urban history. This pioneering approach made it a model for many other city museums that followed later.
