Schloss Mespelbrunn, Water castle in Spessart forest, Germany
The castle stands on a square base with two corner towers, surrounded by a moat filled with water from the adjacent Elsava river tributary.
The initial structure dates from 1412 when Johann von Nassau granted Hamann Echter permission to build a house as a reward for his services.
Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn, a member of the castle's family, served as Prince-bishop of Würzburg and established a university and hospital in the region.
The castle opens daily from Easter to October between 9 AM and 5 PM, with guided tours included in the admission price of 3.50 euros.
The Counts of Ingelheim family still resides in the southern wing while allowing visitors to explore the northern section of their ancestral residence.
