Invalids' Cemetery, Military cemetery in Mitte, Germany
The Invalids' Cemetery encompasses numerous military graves, monuments, and gravestones arranged along tree-lined pathways near the Berlin-Spandau Ship Canal.
Frederick II of Prussia established this cemetery in 1748 for veterans of the Austrian Succession War who resided at the neighboring Invalidenhaus.
The cemetery contains military sections dedicated to soldiers from different periods, including the Napoleonic Wars, World War I, and World War II.
Visitors can access the cemetery through the main entrance at Scharnhorststrasse 33, with different operating hours during summer and winter seasons.
The Berlin Wall construction in the 1960s resulted in the destruction of one-third of the cemetery grounds for border security infrastructure.

More than thirty years after its fall, the Berlin Wall still marks the city. Between the districts of Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg, and Friedrichshain, traces of concrete, watchtowers, and commemorative plaques tell the story of a people's and a capital's division. Entire segments have been preserved, others transformed into memorial sites or artworks, such as at the East Side Gallery. Along the old border lines, museums and parks bring these historical remnants back to life: Checkpoint Charlie, Bernauer Straße, the Topography of Terror, and Mauerpark. Each site holds a particular silence, reflecting a time that Berlin does not erase but faces squarely. These locations invite understanding, feeling, and sometimes just remembering.
