Arco-Palais

The Arco-Palais sits at the corner of Theatinerstraße and Maffeistraße, displaying an ornate facade decorated with four seasons frescos in the entrance hall. The building forms part of the Fünf Höfe complex, blending retail spaces with public areas in Munich's central shopping quarter.

Built between 1908 and 1910 by architects Georg Meister and Oswald Bieber, the structure was owned by the Bavarian noble family Arco until 1937. The building then changed hands multiple times, yet its architectural character remained intact through these transitions.

The building housed Heinrich Thannhauser's Modern Gallery from 1909 to 1928, which displayed works from the Neue Künstlervereinigung München and Der Blaue Reiter. These spaces served as a key venue for modern art movements in the city at that time.

Located centrally in the shopping quarter, the building is easily accessible on foot from Munich's major squares and streets. Its mixed-use design with shops and public passages makes it a natural waypoint when exploring the old town center.

The building received Munich's Fassadenpreis award, honoring its exceptional facade design and careful preservation of historical details. This recognition highlights its importance as an example of quality architectural conservation in the old town.
