The station opened on February 7, 1882, as part of the Berlin Stadtbahn viaduct connecting Charlottenburg to Ostbahnhof, with significant reconstruction after World War II.
The station gained prominence through Alfred Döblin's 1929 novel Berlin Alexanderplatz and remains a central meeting point for Berlin residents.
The facility connects Regional-Express trains, S-Bahn lines, U-Bahn networks, trams, and buses, making it a central transfer point for Berlin transportation.
In 1961, the U8 section operated as a ghost station during Berlin's division until the German reunification in 1990 restored full operations.
